This tool was the beginning of it all… Commissioned to Jerry by Bob Stocksdale, this tool was responsible for Jerry’s decision to start manufacturing tools.

Jerry Glaser sold a gouge called the Stocksdale Gouge back in the late ’80′s and early ’90′s. Superbly made, the handles were made from Goncalo Alves, with a stainless steel ferrule. The high speed steel was M4, twice as wear resistant as M2. Jerry made the very first HSS gouge for Stocksdale around 1960, when everything else made was from high carbon steel. He formed Turnmaster Tools to sell HSS turning tools because the main manufacturers at the time were not interested in changing from their method of toolmaking. In my opinion, Glaser single-handedly changed the woodturning world with his introduction of HSS tools.

The fabulous “Glaser Stocksdale Profile” makes them easy to maneuver in tight spaces and gives more actual clearance for the cutting edge to get into tighter areas. It also makes the tool more rigid and able to resist vibration which would cause ripples in the turned wood surface. The flute shapes are precision ground using state of the art CNC Grinding Machines. Then, they are hardened and cryogenically tempered and subjected to our proprietary “Surface Compacting Technology” which enhances the surface of the steel. The process creates a “micro burr” surface which proves to be “extremely effective on the cutting edge of the tool.
The CPM10V material on this tool makes it exceptionally resistant to wear. The steel is atomized and compacted, resulting in an extremely homogeneous structure and dimensional stability.
Combine that with Jerry Glaser’s proprietary “cryogenics processes” being applied since 1995 and you are bound to own what is known today around the world as the “ultimate turning tool”.
Although sharpened, the initial grind is placed just to allow the woodturner to start using the tools right away. It is up to the user to determine if he/she wants to keep the same grind shape after initial use.
Assembled on a 14″ Glaser Hitec Handle.
